The Indian states do not have their own flags, except the former State of Jammu and Kashmir. The flag of Nagaland dates from 1947, when the "Federal Government of Nagas" declared the country's independence on 14th of August. It is plain light blue with a red-yellow-green arc and a six-pointed star white star in the upper corner. Today, of course, the flag is unofficial and represents still the independent Nagaland. Blue and also light blue is the colour of the Mongolian race to which the Naga belong. The six-pointed star could represent the six main ethnic groups of the Naga: Ao, Konyak, Angami, Sema, Lotha and Rengma.

The name "Nagaland" has its roots of course in the "Naga People". This is the state-forming ethnic group. Interesting is, that the name "Naga" is a foreign denomination for the many ethnic groups and tribes in the region. Those are namely very different and know actually no mutual collecting summarizing term and even not a communal spirit. This arises by pressure from outside.
