Flaggen sind auf jeden Fall ein Mittel der Identifikation. Man identifiziert sich – wenn überhaupt – immerhin mit der eigenen Nation, und hisst am Flaggenmast in seinem Vorgarten die Nationalflagge. Ein Bild an das man sich mittlerweile gewöhnt hat. An zweiter Stelle steht vielleicht der Fußballverein, auch das wird oft über eine Fahne zum Ausdruck gebracht. Aber es gibt auch noch andere Identitäten, die einem wichtig sein können: das Herkunftsland der Vorfahren oder auch regionale Aspekte in der Gegend, in der man gerade lebt, der Heimatort oder sogar Stadtteil. Gerade dieses lokale Element kommt am Fahnenmast oft etwas zu kurz, an sprichwörtlichen Feiertagen wie Kirmes oder Schützenfest sieht das mancherorts ganz gut aus. Hier setzt der Liebhaber der Gemeindeflaggen an, und setzt am Mast oder an der Fahnenstange ein wichtiges, für alle sichtbares Zeichen.
