From where the White Huns did once come, is unclear, further of what race they had been. Probably they were mostly Indo-Europeans, but it was a tribal confederation, which even consisted of some Turkish and Mongolian groups. They established about 425 a powerful empire in Central Asia, but were beaten about 560 by Turks and Persians. In 600 died theit last king in India, the remnants retreated to the mountains of the Hindu Kush. The name "White Huns" distinguishes this tribal confederation from the original Huns, who appeared a few years earlier on the scene, although the White Huns have even called themselves "Huns". The Arabs called them "Haital", the Persians called them "Heftal" and the Greeks called them "Ephthalites". This accounts for another today's term: "Hephthalites".
