Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The today's flag of Vermont, was introduced on 1st of June in 1923. It is a single-coloured blue cloth with the coat of arms of the state in the middle. This shows a gold-framed shield with a  landscape. In the middle a pine tree (symbol of New England), to the left and on the right of it a cow and sheaves of grain (agriculture). To the left and on the right of the shield appear branches. They remember the branches, which the soldiers of Vermont weared in 1814 at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the US-american-British war. Above the shield a head of a buck and some pine branches. Below the shield a red banner with the motto of the country: "Vermont – Freedom and Unity".

During the Revolutionary War of the colonies against Great Britain, was formed in today's Vermont – the region was then a part of New York – a group of insurgents under Ethan Allen, the so-called "Green Mountain Boys". They chose as a flag a green cloth, an hint for Vermont, the green mountains, which showed a blue upper corner with thirteen white stars. They stood for the thirteen colonies which had revolted against Great Britain. When Vermont in 1777 became independent, this flag was probably maintained until the joining to the USA on 4th of March 1791, possibly even longer, but this is not exactly known. The flag is still very popular in Vermont, and it is used among others by groups, which demand the secession from the United States.

On 1st of May in 1804, a new flag was introduced. It was created after the then design of the flag of the United States, and showed fifteen horizontal stripes in red and white, and in the blue upper corner fifteen stars, according to the number of members of the Union. Only at the top of the flag the country's name was added in white letters. This flag has been maintained until 1837 despite the changing of the number of member states, and the changes in the design of the flag of the United States.

On 20th of October in 1837 a new flag was introduced. It was once more designed by the design of the flag of the United States, and showed thirteen horizontal stripes in red and white. Only the blue upper corner showed a different picture, but oddly in two variants. Either a large five-pointed star with the national emblem in the center, or an eight-pointed star with a kind of badge in the center, which depicted the heraldry of the coat of arms. Why there were two versions, and whether they serve different purposes, is not known. Both versions have been retained until the introduction of the today's flag on 1st of June in 1923.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:

When the Frenchman Samuel de Champlain visited the country in 1609 as the first European, he called it "Les Verts Monts", the "Green Mountains". Even after 1763, when the French had to evacuate the area, the name was retained, but anglicised to the today's "Vermont". When the country became independent in 1777, it initially was named (for six months) "New Connecticut".
