Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The today's flag of Utah was introduced on 11th of march in 1913. It shows a single-coloured blue bunting with the central element of the seal in the middle, surrounded by a golden circle. Underneath the coat of arms the numbers of two years: "1847" and "1896". The dates represent the beginning of the colonization of land by the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (called "Mormons") under the leadership of Brigham Young, and for the year of the accession of the State of Utah to the United States. The arms show in the center a gold-framed blue shield, on it a beehive. It recalls the word "Deseret" from the Book of Mormon. It means "honey bee". The goal of the immigrants was the creation of a separate Mormon state, which should be called "Deseret". The name   should remind the residents to be busy as bees to fertilize the barren land. Hence the word "Industry" (in the sense of "busy"), appeares above the to the left and on the right right by plants surrounded beehive. Left and right of the blue shield appear flags of the United States and above the emblem of the United States, the bald eagle, holding a bundle of arrows in its talons.

The first Mormon settlers, whose aim was to found the state "Deseret", used a flag which is now called the flag of the Mormon pioneers. It showed alternating white and blue stripes, and that in thirteen pieces, according to the model of the flag of the United States. In a white upper canton was centered a five-pointed blue star, he stood for the Mormons, surrounded by a circle of twelve five-pointed blue stars that stood for the twelve tribes of Israel. This flag is still used today by the Mormons in Utah.

The existence of the Mormon State of Deseret, which was established on 12th of March in 1849, was dependent from the goodwill of the United States. So they chose a new flag, which resembled the flag of the United States. It showed – like the flag of the United States –  thirteen red and white stripes. In the upper corner was a white, sometimes blue-coloured field. It showed the eagle of the United States with a ribbon in its beak, a firing cannon, a beehive and above thirteen small silver five-pointed stars and a somewhat larger silver star.

After the end of the State of Deseret and on the occasion of the relocation of the capital to Filmore the field in the upper corner became transformed on 2nd of October in 1851, apparently as a symbol of a new beginning. It then showed only the eagle and the beehive, and below and above the thirteen small and the one large star. In 1860, three years after Brigham Young was no longer governor and the capital was laid back to Salt Lake City, the own flag of the territory became abolished, because territories and many U.S. states were using then only the flag of the United States. That was obviously meant as a sign of normalization.

On 9th of March in 1911, a new state flag was adopted. It showed a blue bunting and in the middle, single coloured, the central element of the seal, the emblem of Utah. It was maintained for only two years until the introduction of today's flag on 11th of March in 1913.

On 9th of March in 2011, the state flag was changed a little bit. The shield in the coat of arms became white and the number "1847" became added on the shield.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:

The word "Utah" goes back to the Indian people of the "Ute". "Ute" means "Üeople of the Mountains". As in 1847 started the colonization of the country by the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (called "Mormons"), here was found the Mormon State of "Deseret". The word "Deseret" is from the Book of Mormon. It means "honey bee". This name should remind the residents to be busy as bees to fertilize the barren land. In 1858, the name "Deseret" was officially abolished and replaced by "Utah" but it has been preserved in the names of towns, companies, newspapers, etc.
