Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The current state flag of Massachusetts was introduced on 18th of March in 1908. It shows a white bunting and on it the national emblem. The scutcheon with a native american motif dates from the 17th century. It is blue and on it a native indian with bow and arrow in the upper corner a white five-pointed star. He stands for Massachusetts itself. Around the shield the motto of the country: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty)". Above the coat of arms a yellow-blue torus, from it poking out an arm with a sword. The national flag may be used by anyone. A nearly identical flag had already been introduced in 1787 for military purposes.

Massachusetts is one of the two states in the USA, which has its own merchant and naval flag. It was introduced in 1775, is single-coloured white and shows a pine tree. Since 1971, the motto "Appeal to Heaven" has been omitted. A separate Navy Massachusetts has not, but the flag should be used by authorities offshore.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:
