Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The flag of Maryland is a quartered scutcheon flag and shows the heraldry of the blazon of Maryland. This are the emblems of the family of the former owners of the British colony. Sir George Calvert, the Lord of Baltimore, has been awarded its crest in 1622. It shows black and gold vertical stripes, which reverse in colours by a diagonal stripe in the same colors. In 1624 he became Lord of Baltimore (Ireland). His eldest son, Cecil, the second Lord of Baltimore, founded in 1634 the colony of Maryland. Cecil Calvert and his brother Leonard adopted as coat of arms of the colony, the heraldic elements of the family of Calvert with them of the family of their grandmother, the Crosslands.

In the period as a British colony owned by the Calverts had been used the colors of the Calverts as flag, mostly added by the flag of Great Britain in the upper staff quadrant.

In the Civil War Maryland was occupied by troops of the Union (USA), Annapolis and Baltimore came under martial law. Many Marylanders fled across the Potomac to the troops of the Confederation (CSA). They used as a distinguishing feature the red and white cross of the Crosslands, even flags of the CSA added by the coat of arms of Maryland.

The current flag of Maryland was first shown in 1888 at a parade, and adopted as state flag in a some different arrangement on 9th of March in 1904.
