Schriftband, das Motto des Landes: "Union, Justice and Confidence
(Einigkeit, Gerechtigkeit und Vertrauen)".
The
current flag of Louisiana was introduced on 24th of February in 1909. It
shows a single-coloured blue bunting and in the middle of it the central
element of the state seal, a pelican that feeds its young with blood from
his chest. It is regarded as a symbol of sacrifice. Below, on a banner,
the motto of the country: "Union, Justice and Confidence".
The first
official flag of Louisiana was adopted on 11th of February in 1861 on the
occasion of the secession from the United States. It showed thirteen blue
white and red stripes and a red upper staff quadrant with a yellow star. The
design should remember the flag of the United States, blue white and red are
the colours of France, red and yellow are the colours of Spain. Before there
was an unofficial flag. It was single-coloured white and showed a red star
and the pelican motive. It was also used during the Civil War.
