Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The flag of California was designed by William Todd and first hoisted on 14th of June in 1846, when US-american settlers proclaimed in Sonoma the from Mexico independent California Republic.

It shows originally two horizontal bands of white and red in the ratio 5:1. In the upper corner of the wide white band appear a red star and a red bear, below the name of the in 1846 proclaimed state. The bear represents strength. The star stands for peace and sholuld remember the "lone star of Texas". The flag was modified a little bit on 3rd of February in 1911.

The flag shows now in the wide white stripe, a brown bear on a green platform, below the name of the in 1846 proclaimed state and in the upper corner the red five-pointed star.

In the USA this flag is often jokingly called as "communist flag" because it shows a bear, and on top of another a red star. "Bear" is namely a jocular term for the (Soviet-)Russians.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:

The origin of the name California, there are three theories: 1st) The name is Spanish and Latin origin as the composition of the word "caliente" and "fornax", which means "hot stove". 2nd) The name comes from Greek mythology, dating back to the Amazon Queen "Kalliphia" and was given the land by the Spaniards because of the emergence of female Native American warriors. 3rd) The name comes from a novel published in 1510 by the Spaniard Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, which occurs in a legendary land of gold called "California".
