Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge – Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

The flag of Basilicata is colored in blue, and shows in its center the coat of arms of the region. That is a golden bordered silvery shield, with four horizontal blue wavy lines in the middle. These represent the four major rivers of the region: Basenot, Agri, Bradano and Sinni.

Ursprung des Landesnamens – Origin of the Country's Name:

In the times of the Romans, the region was called Lucania. In the Middle Ages it was conquered by Byzantium, which set in a so-called Basilikós as head of the administration. The traditional name Lucania was revitalized in 1932 by Mussolini, since 1945 the region is officially called Basilicata. The terms Lucania / Lucan are used until today for the mountain range that pervades through the region.
