The flag of Apulia is white with two narrow vertical stripes in green and red. Green, white and red are the colors of Italy. In the middle, between the two narrow stripes is placed the coat of arms of the region. It shows, on a blue background, a red bordered silvery octagon with an olive tree in natural colors on it. The head of the shield is golden and shows six green dots, which represent the current provinces of Apulia. Above the coat of arms, is placed a golden hoop crown, a reminder for the Normans, the first Counts of Apulia.

In the times of antiquity, here lived three peoples: Peucetians, Apulers and Messapians. In the times of the Romans only the area of the Peucetians and of the Apulers (they were also called Dauners) was grouped under the term Apulia, today's northern Apulia was counted to Calabria. The name of Apulia was revived by the Norman William Iron Arm, a son of Tancred of Hauteville, who called hisself "Count of Apulia" from ca. 1043.
