Bedeutung/Ursprung der Flagge: Meaning/Origin of the Flag:

Die heutige Flagge von Washington wurde am 07.06.1923 eingeführt. Sie zeigt ein einfarbiges dunkelgrünes Tuch mit dem Siegel des Landes in der Mitte. Das Siegel stammt aus dem Jahr 1889 und wurde von den Gebrüdern Talcott unter Verwendung eines runden Tintenfasses, einer Silberdollar-Münze (für die Kreise) und einer Briefmarke mit dem Portrait von George Washington entworfen. Wegen seiner vielen Nadelwälder trägt der Staat den Spitznamen "Evergreen State" => „Immergrüner Staat“. Dieser Umstand war 1923 bei der Auswahl der Farbe für das Flaggentuch Ausschlag gebend. Vorher gab es schon einige inoffizielle Flaggen, vor allem in Blau und auch Grün.

The today's flag of Washington was introduced on 7th of June in 1923. It shows a single coloured dark green bunting with the seal of the state in the middle. The seal dates from 1889 and was designed by the Talcott Brothers in use of a circular inkwell, a silver dollar coin (the circles) and a stamp with the portrait of George Washington. Because of its many pine forests the state is called with the nickname "Evergreen State". That fact was important in 1923 when they choiced the color for the bunting. Previously there were already some unofficial flags, mostly in blue and green.

Ursprung des Landesnamens: Origin of the Country's Name:

Das Territorium erhielt seinen Namen im Jahre 1853 zu Ehren von George Washington, dem ersten Präsidenten der USA. Zur Unterscheidung von der Haupstadt der USA (Washington D.C.), wird der Staat oft auch als „Washington State“ bezeichnet. The territory was named in 1853 in honor of George Washington, the first president of the United States. To distinguish them from the capital of the USA (Washington DC), the state is oftenly called as "Washington State".
